“90%+ Mindset”: Mathematical Competencies

One of HD’s most distinctive educational philosophies is its emphasis on growth over perfection. As Vice Principal Yang Yucui often says, “Ninety points is enough.” Rather than encouraging students to spend excessive time chasing a perfect score, HD values curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity.

HD believes that innovation comes from exploration and trial-and-error, not from fear of making mistakes. By creating an environment where students are encouraged to take risks and learn from failure, HD helps them develop independent thinking, resilience, and a genuine passion for learning.

Theme Learning

To cultivate innovative, action-oriented, and globally minded citizens, HD’s teachers design an annual “International Week” for every grade. During this immersive, week-long program, teachers co-create interdisciplinary projects that extend classroom learning or introduce entirely new themes.

Students begin by exploring key concepts and theories, then conduct research, collaborate in teams, solve real-world problems, and present creative outcomes. By dedicating an extended period to a single project, students develop critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, and execution skills while gaining a deeper understanding of global issues and diverse perspectives.

STEAM

This course exemplifies the STEAM approach by integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics rather than teaching them separately. Through project-based and problem-driven learning, students explore real-world problems and meaningful themes using experiments, design, field research, and digital storytelling. Working collaboratively, they apply knowledge from multiple disciplines to develop practical solutions instead of passively receiving information.

STEAM emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, communication, and teamwork while helping students connect classroom learning with real life challenges. In doing so, it equips them with the interdisciplinary mindset and problem-solving skills needed for an increasingly complex world.

Arts, Drama, and Music

Every child is born with a desire for self-expression. Art and culture are not only vehicles for aesthetic education but also important pathways to self-awareness and identity formation. In Prep, children are given both a stage for expression and fertile ground for growth.

Art Enlightenment

Through a diverse range of drawing and craft activities, the course helps students develop confidence using different tools and materials while encouraging them to experiment with new ones. The curriculum is thoughtfully integrated with monthly themes, courses such as Design Thinking, special festivals, and the 24 solar terms.

Sound of Music

The course uses the Quaver music education system to develop students’ musical expression and creativity through singing, rhythmic activities, and sound exploration. It also helps them listen attentively to high-quality music and deepen their musical understanding and aesthetic appreciation.

HD Theatre

We present bilingual end-of-term drama performances in Chinese and English and hold an annual Traditional Culture Week and End-of-Term Drama Performance, helping children build confidence in expressing themselves on stage.

Food and Diet

Food preparation with toddlers is about hands-on experiences, building confidence, trying new flavors, and having fun in the kitchen.

Hero's Outdoor Journey

The “Hero’s Journey” is HD’s signature outdoor interdisciplinary program, designed to help students discover their strengths through experiences in reality. Built on the belief that self-discovery is at the heart of education, the program integrates embodied learning with academic subjects.

Through monthly learning expeditions beyond the classroom, such as nature exploration, museum studies, and field-based projects, students engage directly with the world around them. These experiences encourage reflection, curiosity, and personal growth while helping students connect knowledge with practice and uncover their unique potential.

Physical Fitness and Specialized Sports

The physical education curriculum helps students build healthy, flexible, and resilient bodies. It follows a progressive sequence from kindergarten through Grade 5 and moves beyond a traditional competition-focused model. Through gamified, varied activities, it fosters lifelong movement habits.

The program also offers specialized instruction and team training in golf, tennis, swimming, soccer, and martial arts, preparing students to compete in leading youth events in China and internationally.

Neuro-coordination training

Balance and coordination courses help strengthen students’ concentration and body awareness.

Rhythmic Movement Development

Through rhythm awareness and creative dance, students integrate movement with artistic expression.

Sensory Development

Through careful observation, hands-on exploration, and repeated practice, children learn to classify, match, and sort materials, strengthening their sensory awareness.

Life Study

The HD Kindergarten life education curriculum helps young children connect with nature, care for plants and animals, and observe the beginnings and growth of life. CASA teachers have created a rich plant-and-animal learning area where children can explore living things, develop an appreciation for life, and experience the joy of discovery.

Social-Emotional Development

Children’s social difficulties often have underlying causes. When children seek support from a counselor, the counselor listens patiently, helps them understand the situation, and guides them to reflect on their behavioral patterns. When children express anger, counselors help them process their emotions and gradually learn to respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically.

This kind of growth cannot come from lectures or abstract principles alone; it requires personal experience and reflection.

Positive Psychology

HD’s Positive Education program addresses growing challenges among young people, including lack of motivation, social connection, and sense of purpose. Rather than focusing solely on academic achievement, the program encourages students to explore deeper questions such as “Who am I?” and “What does a meaningful life look like?”

Drawing on positive psychology, personal growth, and real-world perspectives, students develop emotional resilience, self-awareness, and a stronger sense of purpose. The program aims to support lifelong well-being by helping students build both the inner strength and values needed to thrive in an uncertain future.

HD Charity

Many charitable activities begin and end with donations. At HD, however, we see philanthropy as an ongoing cycle of learning, action, and accountability. This year, all donations will support the “Read for Love” charity fund, which funds initiatives conceived and run by HD students, from rare disease care and stray animal rescue to educational equity.

Every contribution is transparently accounted for. More than a donation, this is a social practice project planned and carried out by the students themselves.

Differential Teaching

At HD, tiered learning is designed to match students’ abilities rather than accelerate progress. Mathematics is streamed from Grade 7, with advanced students tackling competition-level content while others receive additional instructional support.

English is streamed from Grade 6 into multiple proficiency levels and course pathways. This personalized approach ensures that students learn at an appropriate pace and receive targeted support. As a result, most students improve by at least one CEPT proficiency level each year across listening, speaking, reading, and writing, equivalent to roughly a 10–15 point increase in TOEFL performance.

Focused Development Goal

Each of HD’s students sets a unique set of annual goals. The FDG program guides elementary students to understand themselves, discover their potential, and challenge themselves. It translates each child’s aspirations into personalized annual growth goals.

Through ongoing listening, support, and feedback from teachers, parents, and the wider HD community, the program cultivates intrinsic motivation, resilience, and a growth mindset that supports students’ future development.

Mentorship System

The mentorship system provides each student with personalized, comprehensive support. A team of experienced, dependable teachers serves as mentors, offering academic guidance as well as support tailored to students’ individual profiles and educational goals.

At the heart of the HD model is a collaborative mentor-student relationship. Students select preferred mentors through an application process based on their interests and academic needs.

Extra Curriculum

We offer over 300 EP courses, covering all areas including academic support, competition preparation, and arts enrichment.

Through proposal development, project implementation, testing, and refinement, teams transform ideas into meaningful action and compete through campus and national rounds.

Projects focus on areas such as AI for accessibility, environmental sustainability, and cultural preservation. Combining social responsibility with innovation, the program encourages students to apply technology with purpose, think entrepreneurially, and make a positive impact. It empowers young people to become compassionate problem-solvers and future leaders committed to improving society.

AI for K12

At HD, AI education is integrated across the curriculum rather than taught as a standalone subject. In primary school, students explore AI through hands-on projects that encourage creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving. In middle school, learning progresses from using AI tools to understanding their underlying principles, including algorithms, data literacy, and model training.

Through interdisciplinary projects, students apply AI in meaningful contexts while developing innovation, critical thinking, and digital responsibility. The program aims to build AI literacy and lifelong learning skills, preparing students to engage confidently with an AI-driven future.

Learning Objectives

Deep Dive

The Grade 5 Deep Dive Program provides 200 minutes of weekly personalized learning designed to bridge primary and middle school education. Students choose specialized pathways based on their interests and strengths, with options in language, mathematics, science, arts, and sports. Through project-based learning and real-world challenges, students explore topics in greater depth while developing independence, creativity, and critical thinking.

Deep Dive embraces individualized learning, encouraging students to discover their unique talents, form their own perspectives, and transition confidently into the next stage of their educational journey.

Design Thinking

HD’s Design Thinking course runs throughout middle school and equips students with the tools and mindset to solve real-world problems creatively. Through project-based learning, students explore innovative methods, emerging technologies, and interdisciplinary approaches to tackle meaningful challenges.

Design Thinking emphasizes empathy, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving, helping students connect ideas across different fields. More than a methodology for innovation, Design Thinking encourages students to use creativity to make a positive impact, preparing them to become thoughtful thinkers, effective innovators, and proactive contributors in a rapidly changing world.

Integrated Chinese Curriculum

At HD Primary School, Chinese is a core part of the curriculum because we believe a student’s mother tongue is the foundation of cultural identity, values, and deep thinking. It also provides a strong foundation for learning additional languages.

To support this belief, we have developed a distinctive, comprehensive curriculum that nurtures students’ intellectual and personal growth while fostering a strong Chinese cultural identity and an international perspective.
