HDers do more than participate.

They learn to step forward with confidence, take responsibility, and guide others with clarity in a changing world.

HDers measure success by the difference they make.

Beyond academic results, they build meaningful relationships and grow into responsible global citizens who contribute to their communities.

HDers do not simply follow established paths.

They think independently, connect Eastern wisdom with Western inquiry, and develop new ideas to solve real-world problems.

Meggie Zhang

Class of 2021, HDNB
Cambridge University, Economics
Throughout my three years in high school, I have become increasingly aware of the limits of my own abilities. From the initial shock of scoring only 30 points in mathematics when I first entered high school, to preparing for three AP exams to earn college credits, and later tackling complex problems in quantitative finance during a research program at Columbia University, I have embraced every challenge as an opportunity to grow. Along the way, I have always been eager to remain an open-minded learner and connector, learning from others and growing through collaboration.

I was lucky to choose this school in September 2021 — luckier still to meet educators with dreams and a real philosophy.

In tenth grade I founded the TEDx club and launched TEDxHTNIA Youth. The hardest part wasn't the stage; it was making it happen — the application, the sponsor pitches, lessons from other cities, and planning every detail with classmates. In eleventh grade I stepped back to support the new president, and together we ran another successful event.

Communication isn't just about speaking well: everyone is responsible for their words. So I cared most about making sure every classmate with an idea was heard.

Class of 2022, HDQD
Nanyang Technological University, Architecture
At that time, I was struggling with anxiety and periods of depression. Because of my strong academic performance, my teachers encouraged me to pursue engineering or scientific research. However, I believed that choosing what I love is more important than simply choosing what seems suitable. While many students were still uncertain about their future, I was determined to follow my passion. The inspiration for my first major project came from the rust formed by seawater corroding metal. This experience strengthened my curiosity and spirit of exploration.

In my view, drama is not a niche art form at all. People often say that life is like a play, and a play reflects life. The experiences of our daily lives are a constant source of artistic inspiration. Human connections also depend on one of the most essential elements of drama—expression. It is perhaps one of the most universal aspects of human experience, yet it is often overlooked. I have always hoped to use the power of drama to heal and connect people, and I look forward to exploring this potential further throughout my university journey.

Lisa Fu

Class of 2023, HDSH
Oxford University, PPE
The first debate topic I encountered was about gene-editing technology, including the ethical questions it raises and whether it should be widely adopted. It broadened my perspective and made me realize that the development and application of every new technology involve far more than scientific innovation alone. Political, economic, and ethical considerations are often deeply intertwined with technological progress. Technological advancement is not simply a matter of what we can do, but also what we should do as a society.
